Wide Open Field of Breeders' Cup Hopefuls in $1 Million Shadwell Mile
On Saturday at Keeneland, the track will host the $1 million Shadwell Turf Mile. A key prep for the Breeders Cup Mile, the Grade 1 event will be run at one mile on the turf and has drawn a field of thirteen colts and geldings.
Dutch Connection (GB) tops the field as the lukewarm favorite at odds of 4-1 for trainer Charles Hills. A three-year-old son of Dutch Art (GB), he has been on the board in eight of his nine starts and is a three-time career winner. He has been second in his last two starts in Europe and was second in a Group 1 two races back. He will be trying to earn his first graded stakes victory and will have jockey Jim Crowley in the irons from post position five.
Bobby's Kitten making second start off the bench
Second choice at morning line odds of 6-1 is Bobby’s Kitten, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) last year. Trained by Chad Brown and named after the late Robert Frankel by owners and breeders Ken and Sarah Ramsey, the four-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy has won five of his twelve starts. He has only one start this year – a seventh place finish in the Play the King Stakes (G2) at Woodbine- and will try to move forward with Mike Smith aboard from post position nine.
Seek Again trying for first win of the year
Also in the field at morning line odds of 6-1 is Seek Again, one of two horses in the race for trainer Bill Mott. A five-year-old son of Speightstown, he has been on the board in twelve of his sixteen starts and is a multiple graded stakes winner. He has been third in all three starts this year and will try to improve off of his last effort in the Fourstardave Handicap (G2). Julian Leparoux will be aboard and they will break from the outside post.
