Untapable Makes 2016 Debut in Grade 2 Azeri
The first of three graded stakes races on the March 19 card at Oaklawn, the Grade 2 $350,000 Azeri Stakes features the return of Untapable who will take on seven rivals in the mile and one sixteenth test.
Untapable, tabbed as the even-money favorite, has not raced since finishing second by a neck in the Grade 1 Spinster October 4 at Keeneland. The race was intended to be a prep for the brilliant filly’s title defense in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff, but Untapable’s connections were forced to scratch due to an illness leading up to the race. In top form, Untapable would be extremely difficult to beat, but many handicappers will question the now five year-old mare’s race readiness after spending over five months on the sidelines. The comeback works have all been above average and trainer Steve Asmussen connects at a 16% clip with runners returning from layoffs between 61 and 180 days.
Call Pat always rolling late
Call Pat (3/1) is a consistent closer and returned from a layoff of her own to win the Grade 3 Bayakoa February 14 at Oaklawn despite a less than favorable trip. The Brad Cox trainee has recorded faster figures in the past, and seems likely to move forward for the trainer who connects at a 22% clip with runners making their second start following a layoff.
California shipper offers appealing price
Kyriaki (10/1) is an appealing price, as the southern California shipper rolls into Oaklawn while making the third start of her current form cycle for trainer Peter Eurton. If this filly takes to the local soil, she is plenty capable of making some serious noise.
