Suddenbreakingnews Looking for Repeat in $900,000 Rebel Stakes
On Saturday at Oaklawn Park, the featured race is the $900,000 Rebel Stakes. A prep race for the Arkansas Derby (G1) and ultimately, the Kentucky Derby (G1), the Grade 2 event will be run at a mile and a sixteenth and has drawn a field of fourteen three-year-old colts and geldings.
Suddenbreakingnews has been installed as the morning line favorite at odds of 3-1 for trainer Donnie Von Hemel. A bay son of Mineshaft, he has been no worse than second from six starts and launched himself into the Kentucky Derby (G1) scene with an upset victory from off of the pace in the Southwest Stakes (G3) last time out. He has been training steadily since that race and will break from the outside post under jockey Luis Quinonez.
Cupid stepping up to stakes competition
Second choice at morning line odds of 7-2 is Cupid for trainer Bob Baffert. A gray son of Tapit, he was purchased for $900,000 as a yearling and will be making his stakes debut. After finishing fourth in his career debut as a juvenile, he steadily improved with each start and broke his maiden in his third outing at Santa Anita. Martin Garcia will be aboard and they will break from post position four.
Whitmore trying for first stakes win
Also in the field at morning line odds of 7-2 is Whitmore for trainer Ron Moquett. A chestnut son of Pleasantly Perfect, he has been on the board in three of his four starts and will be trying to earn his third career victory. He won an allowance race in his first start of the year and was second behind Suddenbreakingnews in the Southwest Stakes (G3) last time out. Irad Ortiz, Jr. will be aboard from post position ten.q
