Small, but Competitive Field Lined Up For Louisiana Futurity
The $89,000 Louisiana Futurity carded as race 4 New Years Eve at Fair Grounds draws a field of six two year-old colts set to go six furlongs on the main track.
Despite the short field, the race appears to be up for grabs with 8/5 morning line favorite Cook Some Rice making his first career start at Fair Grounds. The Samuel Breaux trainee ran second in the Louisiana Legacy Stakes November 22 at Delta Downs, and has one win in four starts. No runner in the field has recorded multiple wins, and two maidens are scheduled to compete. Cook Some Rice will likely settle off the early pace breaking from post three under jockey Gerard Melancon.
Just Kissing Buck the one to beat
Just Kissing Buck (2/1) was an easy maiden winner in his last start December 13 at Fair Grounds. The son of Limehouse easily dispatched eleven rivals in his second career start, winning by four lengths. Prior to that effort, Just Kissing Buck was caught at the wire in his debut going seven and a half furlongs at Delta Downs. Jockey CJ Hernandez was aboard for both starts, and has the mount again for trainer Earl Bankston. Just Kissing Buck may have more tactical speed than Cook Some Rice, and could be tough to deny.
Others must step forward
The rest of the field, while undistinguished, may not have to improve all that much to find the winner’s circle. Wild Tchoupitoulas makes his second start for trainer Steve Asmussen, and is lightly raced enough to move forward.
