Eleven Set for the Turf in the $150,000 Red Smith Handicap
On Saturday at Aqueduct, the featured race is the 55th edition of the $150,000 Red Smith Handicap. Scheduled to be run at a mile and three eighths on the turf, the Grade 3 race has drawn a field of eleven.
Big Blue Kitten has been installed as the morning line favorite at odds of 8-5. Trained by Chad Brown, the homebred son of Kittens Joy will be carrying the red and white silks of Ken and Sarah Ramsey. The multiple Grade 1 winner has eleven career victories to his credit, one of which came this year. He was last seen finishing second in the Canadian International (G1) and will break from post four under Joel Rosario.
Legendary (GB) going for third straight win
Second choice at 7-2 on the morning line is Legendary (GB), winner of four of his last five starts for trainer Niall Saville. A five-year-old gelded son of Exceed and Excel (GB), he has been in sharp form since making his stateside debut this year after racing in Great Britain. He was last seen winning the Knickerbocker (G3) at Belmont to earn his first graded stakes win. Sheldon Russell will be in the irons from post eight.
Manighar(FR) a longshotfor masterful Graham Motion
Also in the field and a longshot at 30-1 is Manighar (FR) who will be making his first start for Breeders Cup winning trainer Graham Motion. After competing against Group 1 company in Australia, the eight-year-old gelding was ninth in his lone North American start, the Ft. Marcy (G3) in May. That was his first start since October of 2013 and he has been training sharply at Fair Hill since then. Fernando Jara will be aboard from the outside post.
